Since beginning the Start Making Choices lifestyle in January I've lost close to 50 pounds! While that sounds great, I'd love to say I've lost more than 50 pounds by now. Over the last few weeks I've hit a road block on my path to weight loss and either remained the same weight or gained a pound a week for the last few weeks. I've increased my workouts from 30 minutes a day to 60 minutes a day, but I'm still not dropping the pounds like I used to. However, I think I've discovered the problem: portion sizes.
Over the last few months my portion sizes for various meals (cereal for breakfast, chicken or tuna for lunch, and beef and veggies for dinner) have gotten increasingly larger and larger. I think I was allowing myself to eat more because I knew I was burning more calories with my workouts, but if my goal is weight loss then I'm not accomplishing anything because I'm cancelling the calories burnt by eating more calories.
This week I've decided to make it my priority to start eating smaller portion sizes. One of the things that has helped me in the past was pre-packaged 100-calorie snack packs such as the SmartPop 100-calorie microwave popcorn bags from Orville Redenbacher. It might seem like a simple (even childish) thing to do, but having a "correct" portion size pre-made and ready for you to eat helps prevent over-eating.
Do you have any secrets to maintaining correct portion sizes when you eat? Let me know by posting comments in the comments section.
