Protect Your Skin Under the Summer Sun
It's finally summer! Time for cookouts, pool time, and... ouch, a sunburn? It's easy to have too much fun in the sun and harm your skin in the process. This summer, protect your skin while having a great time outdoors, with these easy-to-follow tips.
Better Ray Blockers
Wear a high-SPF sunscreen whenever you go outside, even on cloudy days. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher that protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Protecting against both kinds of rays will help your skin retain elasticity, leading to fewer wrinkles as you age. Be sure to put sunscreen everywhere, from the tips of your ears to the top of your feet. For those hard-to-reach places, spray-on sunscreens are perfect! Also, remember to reapply over the course of the day, as most sunscreens only last up to two hours.
Quick tip: Want to save a step in your sunscreen prep? Check your makeup bag. Many foundations have sunscreen already added. Smart Cover-ups
Take a critical eye to your closet this summer. Many summer clothes are lightweight, in colors such as white, yellow, and pink. While these light shades can be fun for an evening out, you need more protection from the sun's rays when you're spending time outside during the day. Clothes in darker colors, such as black, green, purple, and blue, offer much more sun protection than lighter shades.
Quick tip: Don't forget your hat! A wide-brimmed hat can shade not only your face, but also your neck, shoulders, and upper arms. The Eyes Have It
When you head out into the sunshine, remember to grab your shades. Spending time in the sun without sunglasses on can damage your vision, not to mention add wrinkles around your eyes from squinting. The best sunglasses should be large, with thick side shields to cover most of your delicate eye area. Also, your sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays; check for a UV rating sticker on the side of your shades to make sure they will completely protect your eyes from the sun.
Quick tip: Apply a little sunscreen on your eyelids, eyebrow area, and under your eyes. Add a cool pair of shades, and your eyes, and the skin around them, will be totally sun-protected. This summer, don't let the sun's rays harm your skin, or spoil your outdoor fun. Keep your skin protected with sunscreen, clothing in darker shades, and the right pair of sunglasses.
