Bond with Nature—And Your Family
Summer is a great time to rest, relax, and reunite with family in the backyard. But with sky-high gas prices and expensive plane tickets, finding seasonal solace requires a little creativity.
So, rather than taking a big trip this year, consider a summer campout in the backyard. You can create a fun and festive outdoor adventure without leaving home. Plus, sleeping under the stars can soothe the soul—and bring your family closer together.
Now comes the fun part. Consider these ideas to make the most of your great backyard campout.
Just Breathe
Amidst work, errands, family activities, chores—and everything else going on in your life— it's always nice to take a moment to stop and smell the flowers. Literally. When you get your campsite arranged, take awhile to relax. Sit back, breathe deeply, and enjoy the fresh air.
Once upon a Time
Stories told around the campfire can stay with us for a lifetime. While ghost stories are fun to tell, your family may enjoy hearing stories about you even more. What was your most embarrassing moment? The proudest? What did you want to be when you grew up? What were your kids like when they were babies?
Kumbaya
Campfire songs can be just as fun and memorable as stories, so pick a favorite and start a family sing-along. Plus, music is good for you. It helps you combat stress, disease, aging, and in general, keeps you healthier and happier. Just remember not to wake up the neighbors!
When You Wish upon a Star
Extinguish the candles, shut off the flashlights, and look for constellations in the night sky. Not too current on your astronomy? Find your "own" constellations by naming the shapes you and your family see in the stars. Then, make a wish on a star. Talk with your family about their wishes—you just might learn something.
Remember to make the most of your campout. It's amazing what just one night away from the television, computer, and cell phone can do for the psyche. So, get ready to turn off the technology and turn on the memories. Happy trails!
Gear Up
One of the great things about backyard camping is that you can reduce the amount of gear you'd typically take for a trip. But try to limit trips into the house, so it will feel more like a true camping experience.
