You will sometimes see that the daily meal plan provides more or less than 100% of a food group. These averages balance over time. In many cases, the meal plans include amounts over 100% of a food group, which reflects use of discretionary calories for that food group.
Discretionary calories are the remaining amount of calories in a meal plan after accounting for calories from the recommended daily amounts of each food group. This leaves extra calories for additional food selections.
Please note that by making substitutions to the meal plan, the nutrient values, such as calories and fat, could increase or decrease. Please be sure to balance your substitutions at other meal occasions.
