Reach Out for the Support You Need to Achieve Your GoalsBy James M. Rippe, M.D.
Setting a goal may be the easiest part of making a personal change. It's a little harder to get off of the couch and get moving. Or to pass on the Chunky Monkey® Ice Cream (290 calories per serving) and grab a Healthy Choice® Mocha Fudge Swirl Bar or a fruit cup (both 90 calories per serving). Plus, life's commitments gobble up your time: There's transporting and supporting the kids in their activities, work—including that overtime project—and chores and more chores. Here's one secret to success: Don't try going it alone; instead, build a support team.
Captain Your Team
Recognize that you have the power to make the changes you desire. Exercise personal control by setting clear goals and sharing them with potential supporters.
Use the Resources of Start Making Choices
Balanced Nutrition and Activity Planners lay the groundwork, but you also can join the Start Making Choices community, where you can share challenges and ideas with others. You can post comments on any of the blogs, or even ask me a question.
Ask Your Family to Support You
Be up front about your dreams. Don't be afraid to ask your spouse or children to join in. For years, my daily exercise focused on running or walking, but when my wife discovered that swimming was the sport she could enjoy for a lifetime, she asked if I would regularly join her (and our swim-team daughters) in the pool. I gave it a try—it was great. Now swimming is one of my main activities, and one of our family's main activities, too.
Find a Balance Buddy
Lunchtime can be a great time for walking when work and family responsibilities eat up other time. Ask a friend to walk with you. Team up to work on balanced nutrition, too.
Seek the Support of Your Healthcare Professional
If you have any health conditions or issues, ask for your doctor's advice and support. Share your Balanced Life Plan. If necessary, your doctor can offer guidance for adapting activities or nutrition goals to your needs.
Find a Support or Interest Group
Taking a little time to get together with people who share a common interest or experience can be refreshing and revitalizing. Just once a month can make a difference.
Building a support team for your efforts toward better balance can help you clear the minor hurdles and succeed both today and in the long-term.
