You don't need a wicker basket and a red, checkered tablecloth (although they really do scream "picnic," don't they?) to take tasty treats to the great outdoors. Give your day a simple pick-me-up with these nutritious picnic possibilities.

Pack a Healthy Picnic

The beauty of the picnic is enjoying a simple meal in nature, not preparing for hours in advance. Start small. Bring an assortment of snacks that add up to a satisfying lunch. Choose foods that don't need to be reheated or won't lose their flavor when they cool down. Salads will do nicely, whether you choose green leaf or fruit. Why not take twenty minutes and make a Countryside Italian Salad? Or whip up a zesty ranch dip the night before, put it in the fridge, and the next morning you'll have a delicious dip that will go great with sliced vegetables. The easiest idea of them all is to pop some Orville Redenbacher's® SmartPop!® before you leave so you'll have a treat to snack on all day.

Stick to the Classics

Whether you have kids or just want to feel like one again, making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich will do the trick. Spread some Peter Pan® on a couple slices of Healthy Choice® 7 Grain bread and decorate it with your favorite jelly. Wash it down with lemonade, then lean back and take a well-deserved nap.

Keep Your Cool

Put your drinks in the freezer the night before. Not only will they stay cold longer, they'll help chill your other food. Set up under a tree, away from the sun, to keep your food fresh longer. Keep yourself cool and refreshed by wearing a hat and sunscreen. And insect repellent is always a good way to keep your composure.

Don't Forget the Fun

Think of all the activities you enjoy doing outside. If you like to exercise, then unfold a mat and practice yoga. If your kids enjoy playing catch, then bring their gloves along. Take your pet and watch her explore a new patch of earth. Or pack a ball, board game, or book, and be ready for whatever the day inspires.
Pick out a new picnic spot each time and keep an eye out for easy recipes and snacks to add to your outdoor fare. To find some light dishes, visit our recipes page and discover some new ways to enjoy your summer days.
