Going-Out Guide

Eating out should be an enjoyable experience. Avoid unwanted calories and after-meal restaurant regret with these helpful tips.
1. Plan ahead. Before you go to a restaurant, check out the menu online. That way, you can decide ahead of time what you're going to eat, when you're not weakened by the atmosphere, romanced by the server, or persuaded by your company.
2. Get it on the side. Restaurants bathe salads in dressing, which can add up unwanted calories and fat in a hurry. Keep the dressing amount in check by asking for it on the side. Added bonus: You'll get crisper (not soggy) lettuce.
3. Break down the breadbasket. Sure, those warm bread rolls are tempting when you're waiting for your food, but they fill you up with calories before your meal arrives. If you can't pass up the bready goodness, tear a roll in half to cut down the portion and still have something small to munch on before mealtime.
4. Divvy it up. Many restaurants serve food in huge portions. Avoid overeating by splitting an entrée with your date. You'll save money and calories. Don't want to share? Ask for the doggie bag when your meal arrives, and split your food in half before you eat anything. That way, you're guaranteed a proper portion—and tasty leftovers.
5. Swap your sides. Lots of entrées come standard with fries on the side. Ask your server to substitute a side salad, plain baked potato, or fruit salad for fries.
