The World's Cheapest Gym... Nature!
Walking is one of the best forms of physical activity you can do. It's great for your heart, low impact, and, best of all, FREE! Once the first leaf turns red, you'll have about two weeks before the rest of them follow suit. Why not use that window to kick off a two-week fitness surge/purge? Take advantage of the fall harvest by eating seasonal fruits and vegetables such as apples, squash, and tomatoes. Then find new trails to explore and get some exercise by visiting the country at its most gorgeous time of the year. No weights, no sweatin' to the oldies classes, just you in a beautiful setting.
Finding the Low-Cost Equivalent
Believe it or not, nature has a StairMaster®, too. They're called steps. Find a park or better yet, walk up your office stairs every day. When you think about it, it doesn't make any sense to ride the elevator all day and then go to the gym to walk up stairs. You can also save a lot of money by riding your bike to and from work. With rising gas prices, walking or even taking the bus is a healthier and cost-effective alternative to sitting in your car, burning fuel in traffic.
Tally Up the Tempo
Here is a list of simple activities and the number of calories they burn. Start small and try just a couple of activities a day.

  • Climbing stairs for 10 minutes = 80 calories
  • Walking for 20 minutes = 100 calories
  • Doubles tennis for one hour = 351 calories
  • Stretching for 20 minutes = 78 calories
  • Running for 30 minutes = 340 calories
  • Hiking for one hour = 350 calories
  • Jumping rope for 20 minutes = 200 calories
If you live in a larger city, a gym membership can run you about $1,000 a year. Ridiculous, right? Even the YMCA is pricey. It costs about $700 a year. This fall, quit the money drain and DIY.
