When you're on vacation, it's hard to find the time, location, or, well, motivation, to work in some exercise. Fear not: We've got some simple ideas and exercises that'll help you take your exercise routine with you anywhere you travel.
  • Skip the morning paper and coffee from your hotel room, and watch the morning news while you burn some calories on the hotel treadmill or elliptical machine. You'll catch up on world events—and offset some of those vacation treats.
  • Instead of lounging on the beach in the sand, get up and walk the shoreline. The people-watching is always great, and if you walk in the water, you'll work your muscles even harder. Added bonus: The sand will buff your feet like
    a free pedicure.
  • If shopping is your activity of choice, make it count. Take the stairs, walk at a brisk pace, and tote your purchases with pride.
  • If you're staying at a resort, check out the exercise classes on the events schedule. A relaxing yoga class is a great way to unwind.
  • Map out a walking route. The best way to really see a new city is to check it out on foot. You'll experience the sights, sounds, and smells at a more personal level. Just make sure to check with the concierge about the safest routes ahead of time.
  • Be one with nature and check out a local park. It's a great way to observe the different flora and fauna on a vacation destination.
  • Hitting up a theme park or a zoo? Walking from roller coasters to exhibits, you'll end up putting in a couple of miles before you can say, "My dogs are barking."
  • Many vacation destinations allow you to rent bikes for an afternoon. So skip the cab fare and get out there and start pedaling.
  • If you're at a lake, jump in! Treading water is a great total-body workout, so skip the noodles and inner tubes and stay afloat on your own. If you're feeling more adventurous, go skiing. You'll work the muscles in your back and arms.
  • If you're a runner, check out your vacation destination on www.mapmyrun.com to see popular running routes before you get there.
  • Headed to the ocean? Get a view of life below the waters—and sneak in a mini-workout—by going snorkeling. Get a closer view of the sea floor by holding your breath, swimming deeper, and getting up close and personal. (Just make sure to blow the sea water out of your snorkel before you take a fresh breath, or you'll be in for an unpleasant salty surprise.)
  • Hit the links, but leave the cart at the clubhouse. Golfing can be a workout, so long as you carry your own bag and don't guzzle high-calorie beverages after
    every hole.
