How to Make Your Workout Gear Last Longer

1. Don't let your workout clothes fester. It's gross but true: Left clumped in a gym bag or hamper, your salty sweat will gradually corrode the material. Toss them into the wash or hand-rinse them after your workout.
2. Read the labels. Workout clothes are made of special materials that stretch with your movements and help your body breathe. Polyester and Lycra® shouldn't be washed in hot water and should be dried at a lower setting.
3. Wash your swimsuit immediately after swimming. The chlorine will break down the fibers. And never put anything elastic, especially a bathing suit, in the dryer. Hang it up on a hanger to retain its shape and elasticity.
4. Avoid putting your shoes in a washing machine. Scrub them by hand.
5. Lace and unlace your shoes when you put them on and take them off. Don't pry and kick them off your feet.
6. If you can, let your running shoes dry between runs. A properly dried shoe lasts longer. Alternate between two pairs if possible.
7. If your shoes get wet, avoid direct heat to dry them. Take the insoles out, open the laces, and let them dry in a cool place.
8. Don't wear your running shoes for anything but exercise.
9. Store your tennis balls where the temperature doesn't fluctuate (the fridge) or use a pressurized tennis ball saver to extend the life of your game.
